Do You Need to Wait 12 Months? What the Guidelines Actually Say

Most of us have heard some version of the same advice. Try for twelve months, and if nothing's happened, then it's worth getting checked. It's true, as far as it goes. It's also only half the picture.

Where the 12-month guideline actually comes from

The World Health Organization defines infertility as the absence of a clinical pregnancy after twelve or more months of regular, unprotected intercourse. That number comes from research showing that roughly 85 to 90 percent of couples with typical fertility conceive within that timeframe. It's a research benchmark built around averages, not a rule about when you're allowed to ask for help.

For women aged 35 and over, clinical guidelines shorten that window to six months, because age is one of the clearer factors affecting how long conception may take.

Both of these numbers are a floor, not a ceiling. They tell you the point by which most people have already conceived. They were never meant to be the earliest point at which a conversation becomes valid.

Signs it's worth a conversation sooner

There are a handful of situations where it makes sense to have a conversation well before the 12 or 6 month mark. You're not sure if you're timing things right. Your tests have all come back "normal," but nothing's happening. Your cycles are irregular, or your periods have stopped altogether. You're 35 or older and it's been six months or more. You've had a previous miscarriage, or you already know about something like PMOS (originally PCOS), endometriosis, or a thyroid issue.

None of these mean something is definitely wrong. They mean a conversation will get you further, faster, than more waiting will.

What this means for you

If you're only a few months in and everything feels steady, there's no need to rush anything. But if any of the situations above sound familiar, or if you'd simply love to understand your own picture properly instead of guessing, you don't need to wait for a calendar to give you permission.

A Fertility Clarity Session looks at your full picture together, your cycle, your signs, your bloods, your history, so you know exactly what you're working with and what's actually worth focusing on next.

I look forward to meeting you! Reach out if you have any questions.

Much love, Zoe x
